By Kaiut teacher Mariana Borio do Rosário
As I was reading a book about neuroplasticity recently recommended by Francisco, I was drawn to the use of the expression “tailor-made”. I have always liked this turn of phrase as to me it implies something customized with a lot of care.
If you have a tailor-made piece of clothing, for instance, it is has been tailored specifically for your body and sense of style. A tailor-made product is designed to fit the needs of an individual customer. In the business world, companies offer tailor-made solutions to meet the expectations of important clients.
In the book “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Norman Doidge, the term tailor-made is used to describe customized treatment programs for people with cognitive disorders. Only with a treatment plan tailor-made to their specific condition and lived experience do they make considerable progress.
All this made me think of the Kaiut method.
The Kaiut lesson plans are effective for people with a wide variety of body types and age, flexibility and mobility, men and women alike. However, in all classes, we see practitioners with a specific condition or ailment, doing a different sequence to the rest of the room. Kaiut teachers are trained to attune to the needs of individual students’ and, whenever necessary, suggest an alternative posture that might be more appropriate for that practitioner, in that moment.
Moreover, with the awareness that each student’s body, mind and energy are unique, the teacher observes, supports and respects each student’s individual journey. A Kaiut instructor is trained to create space for the transformations to take place for each individual at their unique pace.
I like to think of this method as a tailor-made one - not only for the accommodations of the practice for individuals as mentioned above but also at its very core. Kaiut Yoga was designed to meet the needs of a modern society that spends all day sitting at work, at home, driving and so on. For more than 100 years now, human beings have been losing flexibility in the joints due to a reduced daily movement. The Kaiut method is designed specifically to counteract the harmful effects of this phenomenon pervasive in the developed world and keep our bodies functional for longer.
The Kaiut Method also seeks to bring back the state of presence that has been lost in our modern frenetic routine. The time spent in each position together with the instructor’s guiding words and energy leads the students to a state of greater mindfulness.
The intention of this method is to establish for its practitioners the daily habit of using the body to not only build greater physical mobility and health, but also greater focus in the mind. Through tailor-made lesson plans, it supports each individual in moving towards this goal in a loving and caring way.
