Are you like me? I sit at work. I sit to eat. I sit to drive. I sit to pay bills, book the kids summer camps, watch a movie. Pretty much the only time I don't sit is when I am walking briefly between sitting in one place and another.
And this default sitting position is never more true than in winter. I let the dog out in the backyard instead of taking her out for a walk - it's too cold! And yes, sadly I'm talking about winter in April this year.
This past weekend's weather made me realize I have winter body. My body is all achy and stiff. When I get up from sitting I am super tight. What to do? Sukhasana.
I am in love with Sukhasana. This one pose seems to make my winter stiffs go away. It does such wonders for my hips. I vowed to practice yoga every day this past week, even if it is just a pose or two, and almost everyday I found myself craving Sukhasana. As I hold the pose gravity does its thing, and I can literally feel my hips releasing each time I breath into them. The longer I hold the pose, the greater the release. It feels so damn good. And the irony is not lost on me that the way to counteract the damage of sitting is with a sitting pose!
I've actually started to find a way to sit in Sukhasana as I sit in a chair. I was moving my legs into Sukhasana, back and forth, left and right, while eating the other day. I didn't even realize it until my mother who was over for brunch commented with amusement that I was doing yoga at the dinner table.
The sad thing is I caught myself thinking yesterday that I'm glad I found Sukhasana as it allows me to sit more. What I really need to do is sit less!
